  Answers to Common Questions

How accurate is the Directory? How up to date is it?
ACR updates are generally accomplished through a telephone interview, as well as occasional mail verifications. Our update activities reveal that:

  • About 20% of all top computer executives leave their jobs
  • About 7½% of phone numbers change (not including area code changes)
  • About 6½% of company addresses change

All electronic lists and databases are based on the most current data available. The book version is published twice per year so we can distribute as many changes as soon as possible. Contact names are typically accurate at about 80% and phone numbers at about 93%. Data accuracy is something we take very seriously, and we are happy to make a refund guarantee for each client.

Where and how does ACR find new sites/data?
There are a wide variety of places to locate massive lists of company information across the U.S. and Canada. From these sources ACR concentrates on organizations that have the highest potential to be supporting large IT functions.

What data is available for each entry?

  • company name
  • address
  • city, state, and zip/postal code
  • Web URL
  • switchboard phone
  • main server system(s)
  • indication whether a site is using UNIX, Linux or Windows Server OS
  • number of IT employees
  • number of desktop systems deployed throughout the organization
  • number of employees at this organization
  • Vertical industry classification
  • Fortune 1000, InformationWeek 500, or Canada Post 500 listed
  • ACR has developed some small lists of IT departments using Oracle, Sharpoint, Exchange, Cognos, VMware, and others

Unlimited Use databases include all available data. The book version includes all data except the fax number, Fortune codes, total employees and revenue. One-time use lists only include the data required for that particular campaign.

What types of companies and organizations are listed?
ACR concentrates on organizations that have the highest potential to be supporting large IT functions. For an organization to be listed it must have a full-time VP, Director, or Manager of IT; have a multi-user host computer; or have more than 40 deployed PCs in the U.S. or 30 in Canada.

What kind of people are listed?
The Directory lists the top-ranking individual over the IT function, such as the CIO or VP, Director, or Manager of information technology. In addition, second-level managers (which directly report to the top executive) include the manager of software development, manager of operations, manager of networking/data communications, manager of microcomputers, and the manager of technical support.

Who buys the Directory?
The Directory is mainly purchased by hardware, software, supply, and service providers as well as promoters of seminars, conferences, and other training products. Directory buyers also include those people who are listed within, who then use it to contact others in their area who are running the same kind of systems.

How did it begin?
The Directory of Top Computer Executives database was created in 1972 with the goal of covering the largest IT departments across the U.S. and Canada. The primary focus is companies with more than 200 employees.
